Cellar filming for the BBC
Oz Clarke visited the Pebblebed Cellar to film a summer special for the BBC programme Countryfile. The film crew stayed in the excellent Globe Hotel in Topsham. Geoff and Anna joined Oz and the crew for dinner. Filming included a boat trip on the River Exe to the Turf Pub and tasting both the Pebblebed 2006 white and rose. Oz and his fellow food expert Lotty were very complimentary about the wines and strongly supported the buy-drink local message. The film is to be shown in August - details to follow.
Devon Wine week - last week in May
Devon wine week proved to be a huge success. We launched the Devon Wine Trail leaflet on the Saturday. Our cruise on the Sunday proved a bit of a challenge with rain all day but still we had a good number of people attending the tastings in the cellar and a few braved it to Turf for lunch. Tours of the vineyard proved popular on the Monday and the wine dinners on Wednesday at La Petitie Maison in Topsham and Riverford Field Kitchen near Totnes were full houses. Thanks to everybody who supported the wine week and enjoyed drinking English Wine!
Slow Food Tour and Tasting
About 30 Slow Food/Vino and Friends of Pebblebed members visited the vineyard on the 4th May followed by a wine and cheese tasting evening in the Pebbelebed/Vino Cellar in Topsham. Mary Quicke brought some fantastic cheeses and it was interesting to see which cheeses best matched the English (Pebblebed) and Italian wines tasted. Our "in production" red was given its first unofficial tasting! In the cellar there was a real sense of enthusiasm for the traditional products. Thanks to Marc of Vino, Mary Quicke and the Slow Food Devon group for organising.
Pebblebed First for Rothschild Waddesdon Estate
We are delighted that the Five Arrows Hotel part of the Waddesdon Rothschild Estate in Buckinghamshire has included Pebblebed Rose 2006 within its wine list. Rothschild is famous in the wine world for its Portugese and Chilean vineyards and of course for the Lafite and Mouton Vineyards of Bordeaux. Pebblebed is the first English wine to be included on the Five Arrows wine list and Geoff has assisted with English wine dinners at the hotel.
Official Launch and Release of our 2006 Pebblebed Rose at the Exeter Festival
What a fantastic festival - Over 100 small producers showing local products produced on the farm. We had a great three days launching our new 2006 rose on the Friday and culminating on the Sunday with a chance to talk to an audience in the Cookery Theatre with Michael Caines where the rose was matched to Ross Melling (Michaels top chef at Abode Exeter) cooking. We were also very pleased to have a favourable response to our new rose from top wine writer Suzie Atkins in a tutored tasting at the show. But best of all was talking to probably thousands of people about Pebblebed and hearing such positive comments and support.
Update on our first Pebblebed Red
Although we are not ready to release the Pebblebed 2006 red we have provided early tastings to some local wine experts - one unsolicited response was as follows-
"the pebbled red is astonishing! the colour is simply awesome and the nose is very good, intense black fruits, blueberries, bilberries, blackberries, blackcurrants overlayered with a fresh grassy/wild flower character? in the mouth it's rather short and at the moment not much there, but i think it will develop".
Pebblebed Sponsors Water Aid Climate Change Conference at the Met Office in Exeter
We were very pleased to be able to provide from our cellar reserve Pebblebed 2005 white as refreshments during a recent high profile conference on climate change held at the Met Office in Exeter. The conference was very successful and this is now the second time that Pebblebed has been drunk in the fantastic new Met Office building!
Water Aid is a very worthwhile charity which we will look to actively support over the long term.
