Pebblebed Wine Festival 2014 – what a weekend!

Thanks – raised about £6000 for Hospiscare

What a great time – we were blessed with the weather and about 800 people came along some camping to enjoy the music local foods and we managed to line up 49 Devon wines from 10 vineyards for people to taste!

Thanks to everybody who helped support and put on the festival – already thinking about next year and getting 50 devon wines – perhaps matched by 50 Devon Cheeses – there’s a challenge!

Pebblebed Sparkling – Best in Devon

Unlucky for some perhaps but up against all the best Sparkling wines in the UK – Pebblebed Sparkling came 13th out of more than 100 sparkling wines and the highest placed Devon Sparkling. This is a good result considering we were up against all the top vineyards such as Nyetimber and Rigeview. We were 2 places behind an old vintage of Camel Valleys sparkling which has a very good reputation internationally! Of course for us we are pleased when we have good comments from local customers but its also great to have this as confirmation that we are producing top quality sparkling.

Exeter Food Festival 2014

Another fab festival although a bit damp! – we had our old french van serving Devons finest Fizz and oysters. This is our eighth year at the festival and it was great to see lots of old friends and meet many new ones – thanks for tasting and drinking Pebblebed – a big thanks also to chef Michael Caines and the Festival Committee who pulled off another great festival! – see you next year!

Pebblebed Sparkling now at Gidleigh Park

We are now supplying Gidleigh Park with our flagship Sparkling Rose – voted recently the no.1 restaurant in England by the Sunday Times. Gidleigh is home to 2 Michelin star celebrity Chef Michael Caines and a wonderful experience not to be missed. As one would expect, the dining experience is matched with one of the finest cellars in the UK, holding over 1,300 bins under the expert guidance of Master Sommelier, Edouard Oger. So its a priviledge to have Pebblebed in the Cellars.

A record harvest, 45 tonnes

HARVEST 2013 – Nov 2013 – all finished – a very good year!

45 tonnes of grapes – wow!

Well thats it – an amazing effort by all our helpers to bring in this huge harvest. 45 tonnes of grapes equates to about 40,000 bottles – last year we picked only 4 tonnes due to the poor weather – our previous best year was 2010 when we picked about 20 tonnes.

We could not have done this without the wonderful support and help from all over our community. In total we must have had about 500 people help us pick the grapes over the four week harvest period.

The grapes have all been pressed in our Clyst St George Winery and are in various stages of wine production from cold juice awaiting yeast addition to our pinot noir red, harvested in late September, which has gone through fermentation and is already tasting promising!

The wines will go through different wine making stages over the winter period and as it warms up in Spring we will look to bottle our still wines – our fruity dry white – our classic rose and we are very excited about our reds which due to good reviews we are for the first time making in much larger quantities. Our Sparkling wines will then go through a stage of second fermentation in bottle (classic Champagne Method) and will spend a futher 1 to 2 years resting “on lees” in our cellars before disgorging and release.

Time to light the fire and celebrate – a very good Devon Vineyard Year!

Thanks and best wishes

Geoff
